How to Create a Self-Care Routine

By WellSet | July 21, 2023

Self-care is a necessity, not a nice-to-have, but today’s society rarely sees it as such. We explored the importance of self-care as self-preservation and the need for a sustainable routine with WellSet instructor and Life Coach, Aubree Henderson. Understanding the various dimensions of wellness, we approach self-care holistically and provide practical examples to help you on your journey towards holistic well-being.

"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare". - late great poet and activist Audre Lorde

Though we may not necessarily see self-care as political per-se, the sentiment stands that self-care is serious and deeply meaningful. Self-care is not just an indulgence; it is self-preservation and by prioritizing self-care, individuals can thrive both personally and professionally.

What is self-care?

Self-love and self-care are important terms to understand when engaging in a discussion of sustainable self-care. Self-love is the emotional state centered on appreciating and feeling grateful for oneself. It involves having a general positive view of oneself, acknowledging one's gifts, making choices that prioritize personal well-being, and refraining from self-shaming. Self-care, on the other hand, encompasses various practices aimed at nourishing and supporting oneself. It goes beyond the stereotypical bubble baths and luxury items, and can include getting enough sleep, attending therapy, or engaging in personal development.

Self-care is not, however, an excuse to avoid accountability for one's actions, always expensive or luxurious material experience, nor is it limited to specific identity groups.

Why is self-care important?

Self-care is not optional; it is an essential aspect of leading a fulfilling life. Self-love is ultimately cultivated over time through consistently practicing self-care. In practicing it consistently, individuals demonstrate love and commitment to their own well-being, which is an act of self-love. Everyone can practice self-care in ways that align with their unique needs and preferences - it should not feel limited to a stereotypical list or view of what self-care looks like, but can be anything that suits an individuals’ needs and preferences.

Creating a sustainable self-care routine

Sustainable self-care is about incorporating daily practices that align with an individual's lifestyle and values. It is not solely focused on extravagant gestures but rather on small, consistent actions. A sustainable routine considers financial feasibility, fits into existing daily rhythms, and affirms personal values and beliefs.

Wellness encompasses multiple dimensions, including physical, mental, emotional, environmental, social, sexual, and spiritual well-being. Each dimension requires attention and care for a holistic approach to self-care. To support employees in their self-care journey, here are examples of practices in each dimension:

Physical:

  • Engaging in movement that feels good
  • Practicing mindful eating
  • Prioritizing rest
  • Staying hydrated
  • Seeking appropriate medical care when accessible and needed
  • Going above and beyond to take care of our body (ie. getting a massage or acupuncture)

Mental:

  • Taking breaks from tasks
  • Engaging in creative practices
  • Learning something new
  • Being mindful of the information you regularly consume

Emotional:

  • Allowing space for difficult emotions
  • Seeking therapy or coaching
  • Practicing healthy coping skills
  • Connecting with the inner child

Environmental:

  • Spending time outdoors
  • Maintaining a clean and organized space
  • Making the home environment inviting

Social:

  • Spending time with uplifting people
  • Establishing boundaries
  • Finding affirming communities
  • Practicing healthy social media engagement

Sexual:

  • Understanding personal needs
  • Communicating needs and boundaries to partners
  • Reflecting on sexuality and identity

Spiritual:

  • Engaging in meditation or prayer
  • Exploring spiritual texts or rituals
  • Nurturing one's connection with personal spirituality

Each dimension of self-care can be incorporated into a sustainable self-care routine in such a way that is tailored to the individual. Start with one or two areas that require additional care and choose small practices that can be consistently implemented. A tool that can help identify which areas require more attention is a rating scale - individuals can assess personal fulfillment in each dimension, rating it on a scale of 1 to 10.

Gradually add more practices as the initial ones become habits. It's better to start small and sustainably build a routine than to make drastic changes that are difficult to maintain. Keeping in mind consistency is key, self-care is an ongoing journey, and it is important to revisit and adapt practices as needed.
