5 Reasons to Try Somatic Therapy

Written by Elizabeth Kendig | September 01, 2021

Somatic (pronounced sow·ma·tuhk) therapy connects the dots between mind and body to uncover and heal deep trauma. This body-centered approach usually incorporates physical techniques such as dance, yoga, vocal work or simple body scans to help release pent up stress and tension. We're big fans, especially as a complement to talk therapy, or if you're feeling stuck with your progress.

By getting you out of your head and into your body, somatic therapy works from the bottom up to uncover the root of your anxiety or stress.

1. Put your pain to work
According to somatic therapist Zahara Jade, your wounds are the key to your awakening. Her story is proof that your pain and past can support your healing.

2. Learn to self-soothe
You'll learn tools to address panic and anxiety in real-time, and be able to regulate and calm your own nervous system.

3. Peel back the layers
Sometimes you don't know what you don't know. By getting you out of your head and into your body, somatic therapy works from the bottom up to uncover the root of your anxiety or stress.

4. Release trauma gently
With somatic healing, you can address traumatic memories without retelling or reliving the experience. Instead, you'll use body awareness and self-regulation techniques to help decrease distress and PTSD symptoms.

5. It's completely customized
"I had a somatic body work session with Janet DeHart that combined pressure points, massage, cranial sacral therapy and energy healing and felt transformed afterwards." –WellSet client
